In the decades before the Civil War, the United States was home to dozens of utopian communities, scattered from Maine to Illinois.
Historian Joyce Haworth will unpack their stories: the idealism of New Harmony in Indiana, the “free love" of Oneida Colony, and the religious zeal of the Shakers. These utopias reflected the experimental, boisterous nature of American society.
