Historian Joyce Haworth will explore the ways Jefferson justified his slaveholding to those around him and to himself.

The problem with Tom is that he said things like, “Nothing is more certainly written in the book of fate than that [the slaves] are to be free” while continuing to hold and profit from his own enslaved people. Historian Joyce Haworth will explore the ways Jefferson justified his slaveholding to those around him and to himself. His choices illustrate conflicts embedded in early American society.
