United States Foreign Policy in the 21st Century looks at the issues that will shape our foreign policy in the future. This program will be held via Zoom. A valid email is required for registration.
After we won our independence in 1783 our foreign policy focused on Europe. In the 1800s we expanded our horizon - the Monroe Doctrine, the Pacific, southeast Asia. In the 1900s we swung from Teddy Roosevelt's Imperialism, to isolationism, through WWII - emerging as the world's leading economic and military power - to the Cold War and the end of the Soviet Union. We entered the 21st century with 9/11, and now the world looks very different than it ever has before. What are the likely issues we will need to respond to? What trends can we identify? Will this be the century of China or international coalitions or sectarian / religious conflict? What challenges will we face in the international arena as we confront climate change and the slow approach of the end of fossil fuels?
